Security Bulletin: Microsoft Phone Scam
BeckyStrause
The scenario goes like this: “Hello, this is Microsoft Tech Support and we have detected a serious virus on your computer and we need to log in right away so that we can help you.”
This is a scam.
The person who is calling is not from Microsoft, but rather someone trying to scam money out of you. However, with the panicked way they speak and their knowledge, it seems important to let them do what they’re asking to do. But don’t. Don’t let them do anything on your computer and don’t give them any information.
Microsoft has information on this scam, found here
, and they state very clearly that, “Neither Microsoft nor our partners make unsolicited phone calls (also known as cold calls) to charge you for computer security or software fixes.”
They also make recommendations in protecting yourself. If someone claiming to be from Microsoft tech support calls you:
- Do not purchase any software or services.
- Ask if there is a fee or subscription associated with the “service.” If there is, hang up.
- Never give control of your computer to a third party unless you can confirm that it is a legitimate representative of a computer support team with whom you are already a customer.
- Take the caller’s information down and immediately report it to your local authorities.
- Never provide your credit card or financial information to someone claiming to be from Microsoft tech support.
The most important thing is to be educated, and prepared in case you receive calls like this. Please also share this information with others. As always, if there is anyway in which Eberly Systems can assist you, please contact us.
